Photo-based.

I am fascinated by photography.  The technical based aspect is intriguing and I am moved by the remarkable possibilites of the medium.  In an effort to busy myself, I wandered into yet another DUMBO gallery a few days ago and was introduced to the work of the following artists...

Sweet Dreams Are Made of These...

On Saturday I received an email completely in the spirit of The Inflatable Mattress from the amazingly talented Jodie Lyn-Kee-Chow.  It was so weirdly inspirational that I am compelled to post it along with some choice images + LINKS.

"Hi Kenya,

I had a crazy ass dream about you last night.
You were doing some really outlandish installation and performance. I mean really over the top. It was at a place like the MTA train tracks at the end of the line and you had the site including the pipes wires, tracks all painted in blue and had blue people wearing Rastafarian colors as if they were all of same tribe. On the outskirts of the site you had these big Lynda Benglis like sculptures that looked like waves of the ocean. They were easy to maneuver and so I picked one up and threw it in the middle of your site. Then I saw you and I was taken to a tunnel where I found my old work stuck into a corner. I tried to get it out but I couldn't.
It was crazy weird.
Peace,
Jodie"

Busy yourself.

Being a good guest is just as important as being a good host. In fact, I'm beginning to believe that these elements might be mutually inclusive for an enjoyable visit.  One of the ways in which a guest might inspire goodwill, at least if your host is a New Yorker, is to busy yourself.  The default mode of the New Yorker is 'busy', so a kind of mimicry on the part of the guest is a worthwhile pursuit.  Plus it gives you loads to talk about when you do reconnect, making you all the more fabulous.

The day began with a private yoga session with Sara Hart (iHart Yoga) followed by a delightful breakfast (oatmeal, fresh pineapple, oranges, toast, and tea).  One of my assigned 'chores' was a clothing drop off at the Goodwill and on the way I stopped by BAMCafe for a venue walkthrough for Saturday's performance. While at BAM I peeped the COVER VERSION LP show (shout out to Paul Mpagi Sepuya, Colin Sapp and Denise Kupferschmidt) Because I took an slightly difference route, I discovered Marseille Fashion.  They are all about the custom dancehall fashions, and while my dutty wine needs work, I do love a costume...

Then I was off to the Brooklyn Arts Council to enjoy a bite of lunch with my friend-girl Ethany.  After the best lentil soup I've ever tasted, I returned to the BAC building and went to an exhibition at the DUMBO Arts Center (Highly recommended).  Browsing PowerHouse Books is always a treat, and being a Wednesday, I  topped off the daylight hours with a visit to MidTown Comics.

Finally, I made a good on a pair of comp tickets for (M)IMOSA aka Twenty Looks or Paris is Burning at The Judson Church with my SigFig.

Toothpaste.

While I have most of my supplies (linen, lotion, hairgrease, etc.), there are a few choice items that I am purposefully excluding from my kit.  One example is toothpaste.  I once read this article in college that positioned dental hygiene as a kind of shamanistic ritual that is indigenous to American culture.  I've always been fascinated by this recasting and find that the general claims of the article are true. I hypothesize that every host will have a unique product for toothbrushing and am contemplating a few options for documenting this, in addition to using it of course. Twice. Daily.  Erik Boker has already dissected dental paste in his work, perhaps I can continue the conversation...

"When [y’all] wake up in the morning, don’t just brush your teeth, man. Scrub your tongue, man. Scrub that f—kin’ halitosis off your f—kin’ tongue of yours. This is real talk, man."   - Pretty Toney (a.k.a Ghostface Killah)

Week One: A ReCap

My intention was to record updates on a daily basis, but I think this might be unrealistic.  My Blogging capabilities via BlackBerry are limited and I think the fact that my Bernie MacBook has long since gone to pasture is actually a good thing. As I continue along this journey, my role/performance as 'guest' is intimately tied to analog interaction.  That being said, the seven days at Simone's was incredible.  I will attempt to summarize my experience here using a curated selection of words and images:

On Friday Simone hosted another one of her famous dinner parties.  Typically, it's strictly for the ladies and full of intelligent conversation, wonderful food, and a heavy dose of inspiration.  After the meal we were each given an afghan to snuggle in.  It was like an after dinner cordial- sweet and warm.

After a six-year learning curve, I can finally manage winter walks (layers, warm boots, covered ears and gloved hands  are a must).  I think it's the small town country that compels me, but I just love to walk around.  Last Thursday (?)  I walked from my apartment  (supply pick up) in Bed-Stuy to Ft. Greene.  On the way I spied a public art piece announcing the 2010 exhibition "The Pink Elephant Speaks" curated by Dexter Wimberly.  I hadn't peeped this installation before, but it was a treat to discover it as Parliment Funkadelic chorused 'freak of the week' in my headphones.

I am collaborating with Sara Hart on a performance project (Soul Clap: One More 'Gin) and we met to discuss a few of the details.  In addition to being an amazing photographer, she is a yogi, teacher, and all around righteous human being. Apparently, righteous human beings need reminders, so I figured I would pay it forward with the images above.

Nothing says "home" quite like TV.  Even with my fancy book learning, television programing still connects to residual memories of my growing up.  Fortunately, Simone and I have similar tastes- especially with regard to the reality genre.  I am actually enriched by the cautionary tales that these shows provide, plus where else will I find catchphrases to season my conversations with?
Allow me a few examples:
  • "including myself...first"
  • "boobsforqueens.com"
  • "Creativity, Uniqueness, Nerve and Talent"
  • Cunty, cunty, cunty, cunty.
  • "I LIIIIIIIIIVE for this bitch!"

On my last night, I managed to finish Simone's autographed copy of ZAMI.  I still don't have another title for my performance at The Kitchen but I did snag a few choice phrases from the book that will stick with me for a long time...
  • Whitelisted
  • Electric Lace
  • Legitimate Gossip
  • Laughing with Blackness

Thanks again Simone.  It was such a pleasure!

Day Two (A).

Simone has lots of tape.  I want to do something with it.

Day Two.

Today was about the connection between physical + mental health.  My host swears by the inclusion of physical fitness as a part of a healthy, well-rounded lifestyle.  She and I attended a Rebounding class as a start to the day.  Strength and cardio woke me up after a somewhat fitful night's sleep and, even without my sneakers, I could participate fully, supported by the spongy recoil of the mini-trampoline.  Truth be told, the whole endorphin rush is not a game. I am fortunate that Simone has enough guest passes for the rest of my visitation week.  Afterward we chilled (or heated) in the sauna- the Dodge YMCA is off the hook.  Highly recommended; I am looking forward to budgeting for my own membership.

I finished the William Pope.L retrospective.  Great book. His work, his conceptual musings- are all amazing sources for...
In either case, I've culled a few choice quotes for the boook that I would like to share:
  • "I am white culture.  Yet it is the Negro in me what I am." - William Pope.L
  • "White is not a color, but strategy." - William Pope.L
  • "I'm trying to come to the point | I refuse to give up my obsession | America stop pushing I know what I'm doing"  -Allen Ginsberg
